Biotin (Vitamin B7) for Premature Gray Hair

Biotin is heavily marketed against gray hair, but no trial has ever shown it prevents or reverses graying — the honest move is testing B12 and thyroid if graying is rapid, not buying biotin.

    Overview

Biotin is heavily marketed against gray hair, but no trial has ever shown it prevents or reverses graying — the honest move is testing B12 and thyroid if graying is rapid, not buying biotin.

    Verdict

    Insufficient evidence

    How It Works

Biotin is a cofactor in keratin production — relevant to hair structure, not pigmentation. Graying is a failure of melanocyte (pigment cell) stem cells in the follicle, a process biotin does not touch.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
    Not recommended for graying
    Expected timeframe
    N/A

    Protocol

    studied dose
5,000-10,000 mcg/day is the marketed dose; no controlled study has assessed pigmentation
    evidence note
Verdict is insufficient - no study has ever shown biotin affects hair colour
    what happened
No randomised trial or controlled study shows biotin preventing or reversing grey hair. The marketing rests on its legitimate but unrelated role in keratin metabolism
    what might help
Correcting a documented B12 deficiency, and stopping smoking. Nothing reliably reverses established greying
    what actually causes greying
Genetics and age drive most of it, through loss of melanocyte stem cells. Smoking accelerates it. Rarely, greying reflects B12 deficiency, thyroid disease or vitiligo - those are worth excluding

    Evidence

    What the studies say

No randomised trial or controlled study shows biotin preventing or reversing gray hair; the marketing rests on its legitimate (but deficiency-specific) role in hair shedding. Documented reversible causes of premature graying are B12 deficiency (case series show repigmentation after repletion), thyroid disease, and smoking cessation — none involve biotin.

    Safety

    Caveats

High-dose biotin interferes with thyroid and troponin blood tests — stop it 2-3 days before labs. Benign otherwise.

    Less likely to help if

Everyone - greying has not responded to biotin in any study.
