Published in Clin J Sport Med, Vol. 30 (1), pp. 8-13
Methodology
Open-label, non-inferiority randomised trial in 20 long-distance triathlon finishers with mild-to-moderate symptomatic exercise-associated hyponatremia, given a bolus of 3% hypertonic saline by mouth (11) or intravenously (9).
Key Findings
Time from treatment to discharge was 50.3 minutes with oral and 75.8 minutes with IV hypertonic saline (P = 0.02); both groups presented with about 6 symptoms.
Conclusions
Oral 3% saline reversed symptoms of mild-to-moderate EAH at least as well as IV saline.
Limitations
Twenty patients; open label; serum sodium did not change significantly in either group.
