Published in Complement Ther Med, Vol. 48, pp. 102267

    Methodology

Triple-blind randomised trial in 93 postmenopausal women in Ahar, Iran: curcumin 500 mg, vitamin E 200 IU/day or placebo for 8 weeks; hot flash checklist at baseline, 4 and 8 weeks.

    Key Findings

After 8 weeks the mean number of hot flashes was lower with vitamin E than placebo (adjusted mean difference -8.7, 95% CI -0.6 to -15.0, P = 0.029); the difference was not significant at 4 weeks (P = 0.052). No difference in anxiety, sexual function or overall menopausal symptoms.

    Conclusions

Oral curcumin and vitamin E reduced hot flashes but not anxiety, sexual function or menopausal symptom scores.

    Limitations

Small, single city, 8 weeks; the abstract does not give baseline hot flash counts, so the size of the effect is hard to judge.
