Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials in people with dentin hypersensitivity comparing nano-hydroxyapatite treatments with non-hydroxyapatite treatments or placebo; seven databases searched to April 2018; six trials with 4 weeks of follow-up pooled; GRADE assessment.
Key Findings
Overall pooled effect favoured nano-hydroxyapatite (SMD -0.93, 95% CI -1.19 to -0.68, P < 0.00001, high-quality evidence). Evaporative stimuli SMD -1.09 and tactile SMD -0.93 favoured nano-hydroxyapatite; cold stimuli showed no difference (SMD -0.17, 95% CI -0.81 to 0.48, P = 0.61).
Conclusions
Nano-hydroxyapatite-containing treatment gave better relief of dentin hypersensitivity than other treatments, but long-term trials are needed before definitive recommendations.
Limitations
Only six trials and 4 weeks of follow-up; the comparators varied; no long-term data; cold-stimulus pain did not differ.
Supplements Studied
n-HAP-containing treatment showing the most significant desensitizing effect
