Methodology
Systematic review of 11 studies with meta-analysis of 9 randomised controlled trials of oral astaxanthin on skin ageing endpoints
Key Findings
Oral astaxanthin significantly restored skin moisture content (SMD 0.53) and improved elasticity (SMD 0.77) but did NOT significantly reduce wrinkle depth (SMD -0.26, p=0.11).
Conclusions
Oral astaxanthin improves skin moisture and elasticity; wrinkle-depth benefit was not demonstrated.
Limitations
Small trials, high heterogeneity for elasticity (I2=75%), several industry-linked studies, short durations.
Supplements Studied
Oral ASX supplementation significantly restored moisture content and improved elasticity but did not significantly decrease wrinkle depth compared to placebo
Outcomes Measured
Oral ASX supplementation significantly restored moisture content and improved elasticity
did not significantly decrease wrinkle depth (SMD = -0.26; 95% CI = -0.58, 0.06; I2 = 0%; p = 0.11)
improved elasticity (SMD = 0.77; 95% CI = 0.19, 1.35; I2 = 75%; p = 0.009)
