Metoclopramide for Milk Production in Lactating Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of eight randomised controlled trials of metoclopramide versus placebo, no treatment or other galactagogue drugs in lactating women with term or preterm infants.
Key Findings
Metoclopramide did not increase milk volume compared with control despite a significant rise in serum prolactin. No significant adverse events were reported.
Conclusions
Metoclopramide did not improve milk production in lactating women and is not recommended to increase milk production.
Limitations
Small pooled sample, heterogeneous dosing and outcome measurement, prolactin used as surrogate marker.
