Published in Phytomedicine
Methodology
98 subjects with symptomatic chronic venous insufficiency and edema randomized to Pycnogenol 150 mg/day, compression stockings, or both, for 8 weeks.
Key Findings
Rate of ankle swelling, resting flux and clinical symptom scores fell significantly in all groups; Pycnogenol alone outperformed compression alone on all parameters (p<0.05) and combination therapy was best.
Conclusions
French maritime pine bark extract reduced ankle swelling in severe chronic venous insufficiency, alone and added to compression.
Limitations
Open comparator design without placebo, single centre, small sample, and short 8-week follow-up.
Supplements Studied
Patients with CVI may also experience swelling and ulcers.
After 8 weeks treatment there was a significant decrease of rate of ankle swelling, resting flux, transcutaneous pO(2) and clinical symptom scores in all groups with significantly better results for the combination treatment.
