Key Findings
Milk-derived protein did not significantly affect whole-body, lumbar spine, hip, femoral neck, trochanter, intertrochanter or ultradistal radius BMD, nor bone formation or resorption markers.
Conclusions
Milk-derived proteins, including casein, are skeletally neutral and do not leach calcium from bone.
Limitations
Null findings across mostly short trials; few studies in osteoporotic populations; BMD is a surrogate for fracture.
Supplements Studied
Milk-derived protein supplementation did not significantly affect whole-body BMD and BMD at the lumbar spine, hip, femoral neck, trochanter, intertrochanter, and ultradistal radius.
