    Published in Journal of Ethnopharmacology

    Methodology

    Two randomized controlled studies: a 4-week cross-over trial of freeze-dried bitter gourd juice (2.4 g/day) and a 12-week parallel trial of freeze-dried whole fruit (3.6 g/day) versus cucumber-based control.

    Key Findings

No significant between-group differences in the 4-week cross-over study; the 12-week parallel trial showed significant reductions in fasting plasma glucose (p = 0.014).

    Conclusions

Longer supplementation with whole-fruit bitter gourd improved glucose homeostasis markers in prediabetic adults.

    Limitations

Small samples, two differing preparations, short follow-up.
