Abstract
Study showing ashwagandha root extract reduces stress and anxiety while improving overall quality of life in healthy adults.
Methodology
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled three-arm trial of 250 mg and 600 mg standardized ashwagandha root extract over 8 weeks.
Key Findings
In 60 healthy adults under stress, ashwagandha root extract (KSM-66) at 250 mg or 600 mg daily for 8 weeks reduced Perceived Stress Scale and Hamilton Anxiety scores versus placebo, lowered morning serum cortisol, and improved sleep quality, with a clear dose-response favouring 600 mg. No serious adverse events were reported.
Conclusions
Ashwagandha root extract reduces perceived stress, anxiety and cortisol in healthy stressed adults over 8 weeks, with better results at 600 mg/day.
Limitations
Small single-centre sample, short duration, self-reported primary outcomes, healthy rather than clinically anxious participants, and the study was funded by the extract manufacturer.
Supplements Studied
Ashwagandha root extract reduced perceived stress and morning cortisol in healthy adults over the treatment period.
