Published in Phytotherapy Research
Methodology
Double-blind placebo-controlled randomized trial of 500 mg/day rutin versus placebo for three months in 50 patients with type 2 diabetes, measuring glycemic indices, lipids, atherogenic index, IL-6, total antioxidant capacity, malondialdehyde and BDNF
Key Findings
Rutin 500 mg daily reduced fasting glucose, insulin, HbA1c, insulin resistance, LDL, triglycerides, atherogenic index and IL-6 versus placebo.
Conclusions
A single small trial suggests metabolic effects at 500 mg/day; replication is needed before any recommendation.
Limitations
Single centre; 50 participants; three months; no independent replication.
Supplements Studied
In this trial (double-blind, placebo-controlled), 50 T2DM patients (supplement, n = 25 and placebo, n = 25) were randomized and supplemented with 500 mg rutin or placebo per day for 3-months.
