Clinical Evidence of Biomimetic Hydroxyapatite in Oral Care Products for Reducing Dentin Hypersensitivity: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Limeback H, Enax J, Meyer F
Published in Biomimetics (Basel), Vol. 8 (1)
Methodology
Updated systematic review and meta-analysis of human clinical trials of hydroxyapatite-containing oral care products for dentin hypersensitivity; 44 published trials included; GRADE scoring.
Key Findings
Hydroxyapatite reduced dentin hypersensitivity versus placebo by 39.5% (95% CI 30.06 to 48.93) and versus fluoride by 23% (95% CI 11.82 to 34.18); the advantage over other desensitizing agents (10.2%) was not significant. More than half of the trials had high-quality GRADE scores.
Conclusions
Hydroxyapatite added to oral care products was more effective than fluoride for dentin hypersensitivity and may be superior to other desensitizers.
Limitations
Authors of the review (Limeback, Enax, Meyer) also appear on several of the hydroxyapatite trials and reviews in this field, so independent replication is limited; comparisons with other desensitizing agents were not significant; trial lengths were short.
Supplements Studied
HAP significantly reduced dentin hypersensitivity compared to placebo
