    Published in Neurogastroenterology and Motility

    Methodology

Parallel-group double-blind RCT; 48 Rome II IBS patients with significant bloating received VSL#3 twice daily or placebo for 4-8 weeks with scintigraphic colonic transit measurement.

    Key Findings

VSL#3 reduced flatulence scores versus placebo (29.7 vs 39.5, p = 0.011) but did not improve satisfactory relief of bloating, abdominal pain or stool symptoms.

    Conclusions

A multi-strain probiotic reduced flatulence specifically, without broader symptom relief.

    Limitations

Small sample; mixed treatment durations; single centre.
