Methodology
Pilot double-blind placebo-controlled randomized trial of nicotinamide 500 mg twice daily versus placebo in 21 kidney transplant recipients with prior keratinocyte carcinoma, with full-body skin exams at baseline, 4, 8 and 12 months.
Key Findings
No significant difference in actinic keratosis counts between nicotinamide and placebo at 12 months (between-group percent change P = .38); higher dosing was poorly tolerated.
Conclusions
Nicotinamide did not prevent actinic keratoses in this small transplant-recipient trial.
Limitations
Very small pilot sample; wide confidence intervals; dose reduced for GI intolerance.
