The influence of Nigella sativa for asthma control: A meta-analysis
He T, Xu X
Published in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine
Methodology
Systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of four RCTs of Nigella sativa for asthma control.
Key Findings
Increased Asthma Control Test scores (SMD 0.50) and FEV1 (SMD 1.84), but no significant effect on peak expiratory flow, IL-4 or IFN-gamma.
Conclusions
Nigella sativa may add modest benefit to asthma control, with inconsistent effects on objective airflow and inflammatory markers.
Limitations
Only four small trials, wide confidence intervals, no effect on several objective endpoints.
Supplements Studied
Nigella sativa supplementation is associated with increased ACT scores (Std. MD = 0.50; 95% CI = 0.11 to 0.88; P = 0.01), FEV1 (Std. MD = 1.84), but demonstrates no obvious impact on PEF (P = 0.17), IL-4 (P = 0.50), or IFN-γ (P = 0.16)
