    Musazadeh V, Dehghan P, Khoshbaten M

Published in European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology

    Methodology

Triple-blind placebo-controlled randomized trial in 46 NAFLD patients assigned to camelina sativa oil or placebo for 12 weeks alongside a weight-loss diet; liver enzymes, adiponectin, lipid profile, atherogenic index and anthropometry assessed.

    Key Findings

Significant improvements versus placebo in weight, BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol, atherogenic index, ALT and adiponectin; HDL-c and several other measures were unchanged.

    Conclusions

Camelina oil improved metabolic and hepatic markers in NAFLD during a weight-loss program.

    Limitations

Small single-centre sample, overlapping cohort with related trials, no imaging or biopsy endpoint, short duration.

    Supplements Studied

CSO caused significant differences in weight, BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, triglyceride, total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) ... in the CSO group compared with the placebo group (P < 0.046 for all).

    Outcomes Measured

CSO caused significant differences in ... alanine aminotransferase, and adiponectin concentrations in the CSO group compared with the placebo group.
