Methodology
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial of 12 mg/day astaxanthin for four weeks in career firefighters with standardized resistance training
Key Findings
Four weeks of astaxanthin did not significantly affect fasting markers of oxidative stress or most cardiometabolic outcomes; observed changes in IL-1beta, cortisol and uric acid were mostly within-group rather than between-group. Some evidence of a raised ventilatory anaerobic threshold.
Conclusions
Short-term astaxanthin produced no clear between-group cardiometabolic or oxidative-stress benefit in this population.
Limitations
Very small sample (n=15), male-only, four-week exposure, many exploratory endpoints.
