Methodology
Systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis of 125 randomized trials (12,541 patients) of desensitizing toothpastes, searched to February 2019, with GRADE certainty ratings for tactile, cold and air stimuli.
Key Findings
Versus fluoride, potassium plus hydroxyapatite had large effects for tactile (SMD 2.47, 95% CI 0.3 to 4.64) and air stimuli (SMD 2.44, 95% CI 0.33 to 4.55), with wide intervals. Calcium sodium phosphosilicate was most beneficial across all three stimuli; stannous fluoride, potassium and arginine also helped.
Conclusions
Most toothpaste formulations were superior to placebo or fluoride; potassium combined with hydroxyapatite was among the beneficial options for tactile and air stimuli.
Limitations
Hydroxyapatite appears only in combination with potassium in this network, with very wide confidence intervals; indirect comparisons between products.
Supplements Studied
