Oral Hyaluronan Relieves Wrinkles and Improves Dry Skin: A 12-Week Double-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Study

    Hsu TF

    Published in Nutrients

    Methodology

Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 120 mg/day oral hyaluronan for 12 weeks in 40 healthy Asian men and women aged 35-64; outcomes were wrinkle assessment, stratum corneum water content, transepidermal water loss, elasticity and image analysis, measured at 8 and 12 weeks.

    Key Findings

40 healthy Asian men and women aged 35-64 took 120 mg of oral hyaluronan or placebo daily for 12 weeks in a double-blind randomised trial. After 12 weeks the hyaluronan group showed significantly better wrinkle assessment, stratum corneum water content, transepidermal water loss and skin elasticity than placebo. Percentage change from baseline in wrinkle assessment, stratum corneum water content and elasticity was significantly better with hyaluronan at both 8 and 12 weeks. The authors conclude oral hyaluronan may suppress wrinkles and improve skin condition.

    Conclusions

Oral hyaluronan may suppress wrinkles and improve skin condition.

    Limitations

Only 40 participants from one ethnic group over 12 weeks, and three of the authors are employees of the company that makes the ingredient, so an industry conflict of interest applies; no effect sizes or confidence intervals were reported in the abstract.

    Supplements Studied

The present findings indicate that oral ingestion of HA may suppress wrinkles and improve skin condition.
