Effects of Astaxanthin Supplementation on Fatigue, Motor Function and Cognition: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

    Liu C, Dong X, Jia J, Ha M

Published in Biological Research for Nursing

    Methodology

Random-effects meta-analysis with meta-regression of 11 RCTs in healthy participants

    Key Findings

Cognitive accuracy effect only marginally significant (SMD 0.12, CI -0.02 to 0.26) and reaction time not significant (SMD -0.08). Physical performance improved (SMD 0.62) and fat oxidation increased (SMD 2.56), with greater benefit at doses >=20 mg and durations >12 weeks.

    Conclusions

Astaxanthin improves aerobic exercise efficiency at higher doses but shows no clear cognitive benefit.

    Limitations

Small healthy-volunteer samples; few trials per endpoint; heterogeneous outcome measures.

    Supplements Studied

    Astaxanthin
    Compound

astaxanthin supplementation could significantly enhance aerobic exercise efficiency, especially at higher doses and for longer durations

    Outcomes Measured

The effects of astaxanthin supplementation for 8-12 weeks on cognitive accuracy were marginally significant and on reaction time was not significant
