Published in Clinical Nutrition
Methodology
Double-blind placebo-controlled randomized trial of daily 1 g fish oil (430 mg DHA, 90 mg EPA), 22 mg carotenoids and 15 mg vitamin E for 24 months in cognitively healthy adults aged 65+.
Key Findings
The active group recorded significantly fewer working-memory errors than placebo after 24 months, with larger advantages at higher cognitive load (effect sizes 0.090-0.105).
Conclusions
A combined omega-3, carotenoid and vitamin E formulation produced small working-memory benefits in healthy older adults.
Limitations
Small sample (n = 60), combination formula preventing attribution to a single nutrient, and small effect sizes.
Supplements Studied
Following 24-month supplementation, individuals in the active group recorded significantly fewer errors in working memory tasks than individuals receiving placebo.
