Effects of folic acid supplementation on hearing in older adults: a randomized, controlled trial
Durga J, Verhoef P, Anteunis LJ, Schouten E, Kok FJ
Published in Annals of Internal Medicine
Key Findings
Folic acid 800 mcg/day for 3 years slowed decline in low-frequency hearing thresholds but had no effect on high-frequency hearing.
Conclusions
Folic acid modestly protects speech-frequency hearing in older adults with raised homocysteine in a non-fortified population.
Supplements Studied
Folate (Vitamin B9)
Vitamin
After 3 years, thresholds of the low frequencies increased by 1.0 dB in the folic acid group and by 1.7 dB in the placebo group (difference, -0.7 dB; P = 0.020). Folic acid supplementation did not affect the decline in hearing high frequencies.
