Published in Frontiers in Nutrition
Methodology
Systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of berberine in adults
Key Findings
Berberine reduced body weight (WMD -0.84 kg; 95% CI -1.34 to -0.34) and BMI (WMD -0.25 kg/m2), alongside improvements in triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL, fasting glucose, insulin, HbA1c and HOMA-IR. Optimal dose for weight was about 1 g/day.
Conclusions
Lipid profile, glycemic balance, obesity parameters and systolic blood pressure improved with berberine supplementation.
Limitations
Weight effect is small; heterogeneity across doses and durations; many trials in metabolically unhealthy populations.
Supplements Studied
BBR significantly reduced ... weight (WMD = -0.84; 95%CI -1.34,-0.34; P < 0.001), body mass index (WMD = -0.25 kg/m2)
Outcomes Measured
BBR significantly reduced ... weight (WMD = -0.84; 95%CI -1.34,-0.34; P < 0.001), body mass index (WMD = -0.25 kg/m2; 95%CI -0.46, -0.04; P = 0.020)
