Herbs, vitamins and minerals in the treatment of premenstrual syndrome: a systematic review
Whelan AM, Jurgens TM, Naylor H
Published in Canadian Journal of Clinical Pharmacology
Methodology
Systematic review of randomized placebo-controlled trials of herbs, vitamins and minerals promoted for PMS/PMDD, searched from inception to April 2008.
Key Findings
Calcium had the most consistent supporting trial evidence for overall PMS symptom relief including water retention/bloating; evidence for most other natural products was limited or conflicting.
Conclusions
Only calcium carbonate has reasonably consistent RCT support; other natural products need better trials.
Limitations
Older search window; small heterogeneous trials; variable symptom scales.
Supplements Studied
To identify herbs, vitamins and minerals advocated for the treatment of PMS and/or PMDD and to systematically review evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to determine their efficacy in reducing severity of PMS/PMDD symptoms.
