Abstract
Randomized double-blind trial of SDA-enriched soybean oil on the omega-3 index in 252 overweight adults.
Methodology
Randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind multicenter trial; 252 overweight adults assigned to control soybean oil, 1 g/d encapsulated EPA, or 14.7 g/d SDA-enriched soybean oil providing 4.2 g SDA for 12 weeks
Key Findings
After 12 weeks the omega-3 index was 4.15% (control), 4.84% (EPA) and 4.69% (SDA); both EPA (P<0.001) and SDA (P=0.006) exceeded control. No adverse treatment-related effects were reported.
Conclusions
SDA-enriched soybean oil raises the omega-3 index by increasing erythrocyte EPA, offering a land-based route to higher long-chain n-3 status.
Limitations
Used SDA-enriched soybean oil rather than Ahiflower oil; industry-sponsored; 12 weeks with surrogate biomarker endpoints only, no clinical outcomes; DHA not increased.
Supplements Studied
SDA-enriched soybean oil increased the omega-3 index by raising erythrocyte EPA concentrations.
