Methodology
12-week four-arm randomized controlled trial in 79 adults with impaired fasting glucose (BMI 25-36): camelina sativa oil providing 10 g/day ALA, fatty fish, lean fish, or control diet limited in fish and ALA.
Key Findings
Total and LDL cholesterol fell in the camelina oil group versus both fish groups, and LDL-C/HDL-C and ApoB/ApoA-I ratios fell versus lean fish; no significant changes occurred in glucose metabolism or low-grade inflammation markers.
Conclusions
Camelina oil improved the serum lipid profile relative to fish-enriched diets, but did not change glucose metabolism or inflammation.
Limitations
Modest group sizes (about 20 per arm), single Finnish cohort, surrogate lipid endpoints, no clinical event data.
