    Comparing the effects of yogurt containing Akkermansia muciniphila postbiotic with yogurt containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus postbiotic on body composition, biochemical indices, appetite, and depression scores in overweight or obese adults

    Methodology

    Eight-week randomized, double-blind, three-arm controlled trial comparing A. muciniphila postbiotic-fortified yogurt, L. rhamnosus postbiotic yogurt and low-fat yogurt placebo in adults with overweight or obesity (IRCT20230522058257N1).

    Key Findings

    The Akkermansia postbiotic yogurt group showed significant reductions in waist circumference (P = 0.003), waist-to-height ratio (P = 0.004), body fat percentage (P = 0.032), aspartate aminotransferase (P = 0.045) and appetite scores (P = 0.047) versus control, while the L. rhamnosus yogurt showed no benefit.

    Conclusions

    Yogurt enriched with A. muciniphila postbiotic may favorably affect weight management and liver enzymes, though confirmation is needed.

    Limitations

    Small groups (n = 22 each), short duration, postbiotic dairy matrix rather than a capsule supplement, single centre.
