Systematic review and meta-analysis of 9 RCTs across six databases assessing antioxidant biomarkers
Key Findings
Between-group antioxidant effect was only borderline significant (malondialdehyde, p=0.050). Doses >=20 mg/day showed significant effects on total antioxidant capacity, isoprostane and SOD; doses <20 mg/day showed none. Effects seen at 3 weeks were not observed at 12 weeks.
Conclusions
The antioxidant effect of astaxanthin in humans is unclear based on current randomized evidence.
Limitations
Few trials, reliance on within-group comparisons, inconsistent biomarkers and durations.
