Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control, cross-sectional and cohort studies of vitamin D status and depression.
Key Findings
Meta-analysis of 14 observational studies (n over 31,000) found lower vitamin D levels in people with depression, with a case-control difference of about 12 ng/mL and a cohort hazard ratio near 2.2 for incident depression in the lowest vitamin D categories.
Conclusions
Low vitamin D is consistently associated with depression, but the observational design cannot separate cause from consequence — reduced outdoor activity and poor diet in depression may drive the association.
Limitations
Observational studies only, substantial heterogeneity, variable assay methods and confounding by season, adiposity and physical activity; no trial evidence of antidepressant effect included.
