Published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews
Methodology
Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials of phlebotonics, including rutosides, for signs, symptoms and severity of haemorrhoidal disease and post-haemorrhoidectomy recovery
Key Findings
Phlebotonics as a class showed benefit on haemorrhoidal symptoms such as bleeding and pruritus, but trial quality was limited and rutoside-specific data were sparse.
Conclusions
Class-level benefit exists for flavonoid phlebotonics in haemorrhoids; rutin-specific evidence is indirect.
Limitations
Heterogeneous compounds pooled; older trials at risk of bias; sponsor involvement common.
Supplements Studied
Numerous trials assessing the effect of phlebotonics in treating the symptoms and signs of haemorrhoidal disease suggest that there is a potential benefit.
