Methodology
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled 28-day trial of B. bifidum CCFM16 in adults with Rome IV chronic constipation (53 probiotic, 50 placebo) assessing SBMs, BSFS, PAC-SYM, PAC-QoL, SCFAs and microbiota.
Key Findings
CCFM16 improved stool consistency and increased the proportion of SBM responders, but PAC-SYM and PAC-QoL differences were not statistically significant; acetic and butyric acid concentrations and the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio increased.
Conclusions
B. bifidum CCFM16 relieved some objective constipation measures without significant improvement in patient-reported symptom or quality-of-life scores.
Limitations
Short 4-week duration; single centre; symptom questionnaires showed no significant benefit, so clinical relevance is uncertain.
Supplements Studied
B. bifidum CCFM16 treatment improved the stool consistency and increased the proportion of SBM responders, but the differences in PAC-SYM and PAC-QoL were statistically insignificant between the groups.
