Published in Integrative Cancer Therapies
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of eight randomised controlled trials of Astragalus membranaceus alone for cancer-related fatigue and quality of life; GRADE used to rate certainty.
Key Findings
Astragalus reduced cancer-related fatigue (SMD = -1.63, 95% CI -1.90 to -1.36, P < .00001) and improved quality of life (SMD = 0.86, 95% CI 0.17 to 1.55, P = .01).
Conclusions
Evidence is supportive but the included trials were few, small and of low quality, so support for clinical use remains insufficient.
Limitations
Small number of low-quality trials, heterogeneous cancer types and treatment regimens, mostly Chinese trials.
Supplements Studied
The addition of Astragalus membranaceus to the control group was effective in reducing cancer-related fatigue (SMD = -1.63, 95% CI [-1.90, -1.36], P < .00001).
Outcomes Measured
The addition of Astragalus membranaceus to the control group was effective in reducing cancer-related fatigue (SMD = -1.63, 95% CI [-1.90, -1.36], P < .00001).
