    Methodology

    Cochrane meta-analysis of 23 randomised trials with 39,195 participants comparing niacin with placebo or usual care.

    Key Findings

    Niacin did not reduce all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction or stroke, and 18% of participants discontinued due to side effects.

    Conclusions

    Niacin has no clinically meaningful benefit for cardiovascular prevention and causes frequent adverse effects.

    Limitations

    Trials predominantly in statin-treated secondary prevention populations.
