Published in International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research

    Methodology

Meta-analysis of 5 RCTs (6-12 mg/day, 4-48 weeks) of astaxanthin on ALT, AST, GGT and ALP

    Key Findings

ALT increased slightly versus control (WMD +1.92 U/L, p=0.03); AST, GGT and ALP showed no significant change.

    Conclusions

Astaxanthin did not improve liver enzymes and was associated with a small increase in ALT.

    Limitations

Only five small trials; clinical relevance of a ~2 U/L ALT change is unclear.
