    Daytime and nighttime casein supplements similarly increase muscle size and strength in response to resistance training earlier in the day: a preliminary investigation

    Methodology

    Ten-week randomized supervised resistance training trial comparing 35 g daily casein taken during the day versus before sleep, with diets standardised to 1.8 g protein/kg

    Key Findings

    Both daytime and nighttime casein groups significantly increased lean soft tissue, muscle cross-sectional area and leg press and bench press strength, with no differences between timing groups.

    Conclusions

    Total daily casein intake, not timing, drove hypertrophy and strength gains when protein intake was already adequate.

    Limitations

    Very small sample (13 trained males), no protein-free control group, preliminary design.
