Drugs for preventing lung cancer in healthy people
Cortés-Jofré M, Rueda JR, Asenjo-Lobos C, Madrid E
Published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews
Methodology
Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials of vitamin and mineral supplements, including beta-carotene, vitamin E and selenium, for cancer prevention in healthy populations (CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase to May 2019).
Key Findings
Antioxidant supplements did not reduce cancer incidence and beta-carotene increased risk in some populations, undermining the antioxidant chemoprevention rationale used for skin cancer.
Conclusions
Routine antioxidant supplementation is not supported for cancer prevention and may cause harm.
Limitations
Primary endpoint is lung cancer, so skin cancer inference is indirect.
Supplements Studied
Some studies have suggested a protective effect of antioxidant nutrients and higher dietary levels of fruits and vegetables on lung cancer.
