Published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Methodology
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 54 adults over 50 with low muscle mass receiving 1 g/day Schisandra chinensis extract or placebo for 12 weeks alongside 30-60 min walking at least 3 days/week, with isokinetic knee extension strength, handgrip and body composition
Key Findings
Schisandra extract combined with low-intensity exercise improved measures of muscle strength relative to placebo in older adults.
Conclusions
Modest evidence for a muscle-function benefit when paired with walking; sample small.
Limitations
54 participants; 12 weeks; exercise co-intervention; single-country sample.
Supplements Studied
Fifty-four participants were randomly assigned into 2 groups and, for 12 wk, received either 1 g SCe/d or a placebo.
Outcomes Measured
Studies suggest that Schisandra chinensis Baillon (Sc) may enhance muscle strength and mass because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
