Senftleber NK, Nielsen SM, Andersen JR, Bliddal H, Tarp S, Lauritzen L
Published in Nutrients
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of 42 randomized trials of marine oil supplementation in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and other arthritic conditions
Key Findings
Marine oil supplementation modestly reduced arthritis pain compared with placebo (SMD -0.24, 95% CI -0.42 to -0.07), with similar small effects on leukotriene B4 and swollen joint counts.
Conclusions
Marine oils give a small pain benefit in arthritis, most consistent in rheumatoid arthritis; clinical relevance is limited.
Limitations
Substantial heterogeneity, many small older trials, risk of publication bias.
Supplements Studied
Marine oil supplementation had a small but statistically significant effect on arthritis pain compared with placebo.
Outcomes Measured
Marine oil supplementation had a small but statistically significant effect on arthritis pain compared with placebo.
