Published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research
Methodology
Double-blind randomized placebo-controlled pilot trial of a bromelain-rich freeze-dried pineapple extract added to antibiotics in 60 pediatric patients with orchiepididymitis over 15 days.
Key Findings
Pain scores (VAS and NRS) fell significantly versus placebo and edema regressed rapidly in the active group by week 1 and at study end.
Conclusions
Oral bromelain-rich extract may speed resolution of inflammatory swelling and pain as an adjunct, but the trial is a small pilot in a specific condition.
Limitations
Pilot size, single indication not representative of general edema, short duration, and industry involvement in extract development.
Supplements Studied
A rapid regression of edema was observed in the active group after 1 week and at the end of the study.
