Published in Complementary Medicine Research
Methodology
Systematic review of five randomised controlled trials evaluating ginger alone or in herbal combinations on 24-hour human milk volume.
Key Findings
Ginger enhanced 24-hour milk volume in mothers with vaginal births but failed to improve milk volume after caesarean section. Combination products (ginger with pandan, with turmeric and fenugreek) also increased volume. No adverse effects directly related to ginger were reported.
Conclusions
Ginger could be used to enhance human milk volume in mothers with vaginal births, but not in mothers with C-section.
Limitations
Few small trials, most combining ginger with other herbs, limiting attribution of effect to ginger alone.
Outcomes Measured
Ginger could be used to enhance human milk volume in mothers with vaginal births, but not in mothers with C-section.
