Effects of the traditional Chinese herb Astragalus membranaceus in patients with poststroke fatigue: A double-blind, randomized, controlled preliminary study

Methodology
Double-blind randomised placebo-controlled preliminary trial in 64 patients with post-stroke fatigue given 2.8 g Astragalus membranaceus three times daily for 28 days; outcomes EORTC QLQ-C30 and Brief Fatigue Index.
Key Findings
Brief Fatigue Index improvement was greater with Astragalus than placebo (-17.83 +/- 17.70 vs -8.03 +/- 9.95; p = 0.01), with greater gains in cognitive and social functioning scores.
Conclusions
Astragalus membranaceus improved fatigue and several quality-of-life domains in patients with post-stroke fatigue.
Limitations
Preliminary single-centre study, small sample, short 28-day treatment period, subjective endpoints.
Supplements Studied
The difference in BFI scores between Visit 2 and Visit 1 was -17.83+/-17.70 in the TG, which was greater than that in the CG (-8.03+/-9.95; p=0.01).
