Published in International Journal of Clinical Practice

    Methodology

Randomized placebo-controlled trial; 46 NAFLD patients received 20 g/day camelina sativa oil or 20 g/day sunflower oil alongside a calorie-restricted diet for 12 weeks; glycaemic indices, hs-CRP, LPS, antioxidant enzymes, TAC, MDA and 8-iso-PGF2a measured.

    Key Findings

Camelina oil produced significant between-group differences in insulin, HOMA-IR, hs-CRP, lipopolysaccharide, total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase activity, MDA and 8-iso-PGF2a.

    Conclusions

Camelina oil added to calorie restriction improved insulin resistance, inflammation and oxidative stress markers in NAFLD.

    Limitations

Small sample, single centre, sunflower-oil comparator, 12 weeks only, biomarker rather than histological endpoints.

    Supplements Studied

The CSO supplementation led to significant differences in insulin concentration, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), hs-CRP, LPS, TAC, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, MDA and 8-iso-PGF2alpha between the two groups at end of the study.

    Outcomes Measured

The CSO supplementation led to significant differences in ... total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity.

The CSO supplementation led to significant differences in ... TAC, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, MDA and 8-iso-PGF2alpha between the two groups.

The CSO supplementation led to significant differences in insulin concentration, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).
