Published in New England Journal of Medicine
Methodology
Multicenter, double-blind, placebo- and celecoxib-controlled GAIT trial randomizing 1583 patients with knee osteoarthritis for 24 weeks.
Key Findings
Neither chondroitin sulfate alone nor combined with glucosamine significantly reduced knee pain versus placebo in the overall population; celecoxib did.
Conclusions
Chondroitin sulfate was not superior to placebo for knee osteoarthritis pain overall.
Limitations
High placebo response rate, subgroup findings exploratory, 24-week duration only.
Supplements Studied
Chondroitin sulfate alone or with glucosamine did not significantly reduce knee osteoarthritis pain versus placebo overall.
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate alone or in combination did not reduce pain effectively in the overall group of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
Outcomes Measured
Glucosamine and chondroitin did not reduce pain effectively in the overall group of patients with knee osteoarthritis.
