Published in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology
Abstract
Systematic review and meta-analysis of oral probiotics for acne.
Methodology
Nine randomized studies with 623 patients were reviewed; seven contributed to meta-analysis.
Key Findings
No significant effect was seen at four weeks, while 12-week treatment reduced severity and total lesion counts.
Conclusions
Oral probiotics may improve acne after 12 weeks, but evidence remains heterogeneous and indirect for hormonal acne.
Limitations
Few trials, heterogeneous strains and doses, short-to-medium follow-up, and no hormonal-acne-specific subgroup.
Supplements Studied
After the 12-week intervention, probiotics significantly alleviated disease severity grading.
