Meta-analysis of 5 randomized crossover trials measuring carbohydrate and fat oxidation during high-intensity exercise
Key Findings
Sports drinks had no significant effect on fat oxidation (WMD -0.074; 95% CI -0.19 to 0.06); caffeine had only a borderline effect on fat oxidation (WMD 0.05; 95% CI 0.00-0.10).
Conclusions
Compared with control beverages, sports drinks show no significant improvement in carbohydrate or fat oxidation in athletes.
Limitations
Only five small crossover trials; very high statistical heterogeneity (I2 > 97%).
