Dietary sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprouts reduce colonization and attenuate gastritis in Helicobacter pylori-infected mice and humans

Methodology
Randomized human trial in 48 H. pylori-infected patients fed 70 g/day sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprouts or alfalfa sprout placebo for 8 weeks, alongside a mouse model.
Key Findings
Broccoli sprouts but not placebo lowered urea breath test urease levels and H. pylori stool antigen and reduced markers of gastritis; effects were Nrf2-dependent in mice.
Conclusions
Sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprouts suppress H. pylori colonization and mucosal inflammation but do not eradicate the infection.
Limitations
Small sample, surrogate colonization markers rather than eradication, short duration, and effects reversed after intervention stopped.
Supplements Studied
Intervention with broccoli sprouts, but not with placebo, decreased the levels of urease measured by the urea breath test and H. pylori stool antigen.
