Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of six controlled trials (n = 717) of enteral immunomodulatory diets containing omega-3 fatty acids and gamma-linolenic acid in ALI/ARDS.
Key Findings
No significant reduction in all-cause mortality (RR 0.81, 95% CI 0.50-1.31; p = 0.38); no extension of ventilator-free or ICU-free days. A possible benefit was suggested only in subgroups with high baseline mortality.
Conclusions
Enteral GLA-containing immunomodulatory diets do not reduce severity or mortality in ALI/ARDS.
Limitations
Small number of trials with clinical and formulation heterogeneity; subgroup findings are hypothesis-generating only.
Supplements Studied
The pooled results did not show a significant reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality.
