Methodology
Systematic review of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase and Web of Science to November 2023 for RCTs of probiotic supplementation in psoriasis; five studies with 286 patients pooled.
Key Findings
Probiotic supplementation outperformed placebo for PASI (SMD -1.40; 95% CI -2.63 to -0.17) and Dermatology Life Quality Index (SMD -0.92; 95% CI -1.86 to 0.01).
Conclusions
Probiotic supplementation could be a new adjunct treatment option for psoriasis.
Limitations
Only five small trials, wide confidence intervals, heterogeneous strains and doses, DLQI interval crosses zero.
Supplements Studied
The Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (SMD = -1.40, 95% Cl = -2.63 to -0.17, p < 0.00001) and Dermatology Life Quality Index (SMD = -0.92, 95% Cl = -1.86 to 0.01, p < 0.00001). Score decreased after probiotic supplementation.
