    Abstract

    Clinical review of CoQ10 supplementation in cardiovascular disease treatment

    Methodology

    Narrative review of biochemical, mechanistic and clinical trial literature on coenzyme Q10 in cardiovascular disease (not a systematic review).

    Key Findings

    Narrative review summarising evidence that myocardial coenzyme Q10 is depleted in heart failure and lowered by statin therapy, and that supplementation (typically 100-300 mg/day) raises plasma CoQ10 and improves endothelial function and, in several small trials, functional class in chronic heart failure; effects on hard cardiovascular endpoints were unproven at the time of writing.

    Conclusions

    Coenzyme Q10 has a plausible bioenergetic and antioxidant rationale in cardiovascular disease, with supportive but not definitive clinical trial evidence, particularly in chronic heart failure and statin-treated patients.

    Limitations

    Narrative (non-systematic) review with no formal search strategy, pooled estimates or risk-of-bias appraisal; selective citation possible; predates the Q-SYMBIO trial; authors are long-standing CoQ10 researchers with field-specific interests.
