    Drinking Water to Prevent Postvaccination Presyncope in Adolescents: A Randomized Trial

    Methodology

    Pragmatic randomised controlled trial in adolescents aged 11-21 attending vaccination visits, randomised to offered water (500 mL, 10-60 min pre-vaccination) versus usual care; presyncope measured by validated symptom scale.

    Key Findings

    In 1,807 adolescents receiving vaccinations, drinking 500 mL of water 10-60 minutes beforehand did not reduce presyncope (fainting-related symptoms): rates were similar between the water and no-water groups, and syncope itself was rare in both arms.

    Conclusions

    Drinking water before vaccination did not prevent postvaccination presyncope.

    Limitations

    Single health-system setting; presyncope assessed by symptom checklist rather than objective haemodynamics; actual volume consumed and timing varied; underpowered for frank syncope.
